The St. Dominic Schola Cantorum

Founded in 2024, the St. Dominic Schola Cantorum is a professional sacred music ensemble patronized by St. Dominic Church in Benicia. The Schola provides late medieval, Renaissance, and romantic polyphony to the Roman Liturgy. Beyond presenting works of Palestrina, Byrd, Hassler, Lassus, and others, the schola preserves and expands upon the tradition of polyphonic chanted psalms and antiphons, using arrangements from the Ignatius Pew Missal and newly composed works by director, Luke Shalz as well as other composers, like Jeff Ostrowski and Michel Guimont.

The Schola’s mission is to maintain progressive excellence in church music and restore historic continuity, scripture-oriented musical prayer, and a sense of transcendence to Catholic liturgy.
